Regarding "Yes to the Powerlink/Transmission Line Key to Economic Future" (Editorial, Feb. 27)

2/29/2008 - San Diego Union Tribune
By Brian Fallgren

I am not surprised to see the Union-Tribune fall "reflexively," to use the editorial's own pejorative term, into lock-step with vested corporate interests in supporting the Sunrise Powerlink. Nonetheless, it is disappointing that you and SDG&E still cling to the old "growth at any cost" paradigm when facing the challenges of a future that calls for new solutions.

These are exciting times with new technologies and fresh ideas in energy generation abounding. San Diego can achieve energy independence while maintaining the beauty and health of its backcountry. This can be done. Yet you misrepresent these sophisticated efforts as "unplugging your dryer" and dismiss them as quaintly "impractical." Perhaps you really mean to say "not profitable"? What we need from our local newspaper and electricity provider is leadership in ideas, not stubborn adherence to the old ways of doing things. Your own survival depends on it.
